P7 Pupils Take the Bench in PSNI Kids Court

5th Jun 2026

Our Primary 7 pupils recently had the exciting opportunity to take part in a special PSNI Kids Court initiative, designed to raise awareness of road safety and the dangers of speeding near schools.
During the event, motorists who were detected exceeding the 30mph speed limit (or 40mph speed limit) outside the school, were offered an alternative to receiving a fine and penalty points or having to attend a speed awareness course. Instead, they could appear before a unique courtroom made up of our Primary 7 pupils, who acted as judges and jurors for the day.
The children listened carefully as drivers explained their actions and then questioned them about their understanding of road safety. In the space of 90 minutes, 8 individuals were brought to a special sitting of the Kids Court. By bringing these individuals face to face with the potential consequences, the aim is to change behaviours around speeding.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for pupils to use the speed detection equipment themselves. They quickly discovered that accurately measuring the speed of passing vehicles is much more challenging than it looks!
The event provided a valuable and memorable learning experience, helping pupils develop a greater understanding of road safety while seeing first-hand how the police work to protect local communities. Drivers were held to account and educated by the pupils. Hopefully they will be much more aware of speed limits in the future.
The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part and represented the school with confidence, maturity and enthusiasm.
We would like to thank the PSNI for organising such a worthwhile event. Today's drivers and our P7 pupils will not forget this! ?
