P6/7 Investigate the Importance of Calcium

29th Sep 2016

As part of our Food Topic, Mrs Porter's Primary 6 & 7 class carried out an experiment to demonstrate the importance of Calcium in our bones. We were each given two hard boiled eggs, one was placed in vinegar and the other in water. To keep everything fair, we measured out 120ml of both vinegar and water; used the same beakers and left the containers in the same location for the same amount of time (1 week). The vinegar reacted with the calcium carbonate in the egg shell causing it to dissolve- leaving us with one soft egg, or in terms of our bones: soft and unprotected!
